"How much will it cost?" is always the first question, so here's a straight answer. Below are our typical prices, the extras to allow for, and how to avoid paying twice.
Cost by gate type
| Complete electric gate installation | Typical price, installed |
|---|---|
| Single or double swing gates | £2,500 – £9,000+ |
| Sliding gates (extra track and groundwork) | £4,000 – £10,000+ |
| Bifold gates (ideal for short driveways) | £8,000+ |
Sliding gates cost more than swing gates because of the extra track and groundwork. Bifold gates are ideal for short driveways, where there isn't room for swing gates to open.
What Electric Gates Cost in Carlisle
The cost of electric gates depends mainly on the type of gate, the material and the work needed on site. As a guide, swing gates typically cost £2,500 – £9,000+ installed, sliding gates £4,000 – £10,000+ and bifold gates from £8,000.
Groundwork, cabling and extras such as intercoms or new pillars can add to the total, so we always visit before quoting.

Understanding Automatic Gate Prices
Cheap quotes often leave things out – safety devices, force testing, proper groundwork or the electrical work. Those are what make an automatic gate safe and reliable, and they're included in every price we give.
If you already have sound gates, adding motors usually costs less than a complete new installation. That work is priced after a free site survey.
Every new installation also comes with a 3-year parts and labour warranty and after-sales support from AutoGate Carlisle.

What pushes the price up or down
- Gate size and weight. Wider, taller, heavier gates need bigger motors, stronger hinges and posts.
- The type of automation. Underground motors are hidden away and cost more to fit than overground arms.
- Groundwork. A sliding gate needs a solid base and track; underground motors need foundation boxes dug in and drained. Tarmac, block paving or concrete all affect the work.
- Getting power to the gate. If there's no supply near the gate, a cable has to be run from the house. The longer and harder the route, the more it costs.
- Slopes. A driveway that rises behind the gate may need rising hinges or a different setup.
- Access control. Video intercoms, keypads, app control or fob readers add to the cost.
- Safety devices. Photocells and safety edges aren't optional extras – a powered gate has to have what it needs to pass force testing. We build that into every quote.
Cheap quotes and hidden costs
You can buy a gate kit online for a few hundred pounds. The issue is what happens after. Kits are often underpowered for real gates, they're rarely set up to pass force testing, and when they fail there's nobody to call.
When you compare quotes, check whether they include:
- the safety devices and force testing to BS EN 12453
- the electrical work, done to BS 7671
- the groundwork and making good
- a handover, the manuals and a Declaration of Conformity
- a warranty – ours is 3 years, parts and labour
More on this in why I don't recommend DIY gate kits.
Running costs
Electric gates use very little electricity – the motors only draw real power while the gate is moving. The main ongoing cost is servicing. We recommend a service at least once a year. See how often to service your gates.
