An electric gate is a machine that sits outside in all weathers and gets used every day. Just like a car, it needs regular servicing to stay safe and dependable. Leave it, and small issues – a worn hinge, a dirty photocell, an ageing battery – become breakdowns at the worst possible moment.

We service every major brand, for homes, businesses, farms and apartment developments.

What's included in a service

Every gate is different, but a typical service includes:

  • Safety devices – photocells, safety edges and other sensors tested and cleaned
  • Force testing – closing forces measured against BS EN 12453
  • Motors and gearboxes – checked for wear, noise and leaks, and adjusted
  • Gates, hinges and posts – checked for sagging, wear and loose fixings, and lubricated
  • Sliding gates – track, wheels, rack and end stops checked and cleaned
  • Control board and electrics – connections, settings and moisture checked
  • Remotes, keypads and intercoms – tested
  • Manual release – tested, so you know it works when you need it
  • Battery backup – tested, if fitted

You'll receive a written record of the checks, the test results and anything that needs attention. See automatic gate servicing.

Automatic Gate Maintenance Plans in Carlisle

For most homes, one service a year keeps an automatic gate in good shape. Busier gates – at businesses, farms and apartment developments – benefit from visits every three or six months.

We can set up a regular schedule so you don't have to remember. Each visit follows the same checklist, and you get a written record every time, which is especially useful for anyone responsible for a shared or commercial gate.

Electric Gate Servicing Through a Cumbrian Winter

Cold, wet weather is when gates are most likely to fail. Damp gets into control boxes, batteries lose capacity in the cold and hinges stiffen.

An autumn service is the best preparation: we check seals and drainage, test the battery backup and manual release, and adjust the motors and forces before winter sets in. It's far cheaper than an emergency repair on a frosty January morning.

How often?

Once a year for most homes. Busy commercial or shared gates need servicing more often – usually every three or six months, depending on use. See how often should electric gates be serviced?

Gates at work and shared sites

If your gate is at a business, a car park or an apartment development, the people responsible for the site have legal duties to keep it maintained and safe under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the related workplace regulations. Regular servicing with written records is the easiest way to show you're meeting them. See maintenance contracts.

Taken over a gate you know nothing about?

Moved into a property with electric gates, or taken on a site? We can inspect the system and give you a written report on its condition and safety. See gate inspections and reports.

Between services

There are a few simple, safe jobs you can do yourself – keep photocells clean, clear leaves out of tracks and look out for anything unusual. See simple gate care you can do yourself and looking after your gates through the winter.

Questions people ask me

How much does an electric gate service cost?

It depends on the type and number of gates. Give us a call for a price.

Do you service gates you didn't install?

Yes – every major brand, whoever fitted it.

Is servicing a legal requirement?

For gates at workplaces and shared sites, the people in control of the site must keep them maintained and safe. At a private home it isn't a legal requirement, but it's the best way to keep your family and visitors safe.

What happens if you find a safety problem?

We'll explain it, tell you what's needed and give you a price. If the gate isn't safe to use, we'll say so straight away.
