It's a question I'm asked a lot: "Is it worth fixing, or should I just replace it?" There's no one answer, but here's how I work it out – and I'll always tell you honestly, even if repairing is the cheaper option for you.
Usually worth repairing
- the gate is fairly young, or a good brand that's still supported
- the fault is a single, replaceable part – a capacitor, a photocell, a remote, a board component
- parts are still easy to get
- the rest of the system is in good shape and safe
When Gate Motor Repairs Make Sense
Most gate motors are worth repairing. A worn gearbox, a failed capacitor or a leaking seal can usually be put right for far less than the cost of new automation, and the gate carries on working for years.

Repair makes the most sense when the motor is from a mainstream brand with good parts supply, the gate itself is in decent condition, and the fault is a single part rather than general wear.
We'll tell you honestly whether we think a repair is the right call.
Replacing Old Gate Automation in Carlisle
Sometimes replacement is better value. If the motor is obsolete and parts can't be found, if both motors are worn out, or if the system has no proper safety devices, new automation may be the sensible choice.
When we replace automation, we fit CAME motors and controls, add the safety devices the gate needs and force test it to BS EN 12453. New installations come with our 3-year parts and labour warranty.
In most cases your existing gates can stay; it's only the automation that changes.
Usually better to replace or upgrade
- the motor or board is obsolete and parts are no longer made
- it's been repaired again and again, and the costs are adding up
- the motor was always too small for the gate
- an underground motor has flooded repeatedly
- the system has no proper safety devices and the board can't support them
- you want features the old system can't offer – app control, battery backup, better security
Questions I ask
- Is it safe? If the gate can't be made safe with a repair, that decides it.
- Can I get the parts? And will I still be able to next year?
- What's the repair cost compared with an upgrade? If a repair is getting close to the price of new motors, an upgrade normally makes more sense.
- What's the condition of everything else? The other motor, the board, the hinges and the gate itself.
- What will you get for your money? A new system comes with modern safety features, secure remotes and a fresh start.
Replacing doesn't mean new gates
In most situations, replacing the automation doesn't mean replacing the gates. New motors and a control board can go on your existing gates, as long as they're sound. See upgrading old gate motors and control boards.
A complete new swing gate installation typically starts from £2,500, and new motors on your existing gates are priced after a free site survey.
My promise
I'll give you the options and the prices, and tell you what I'd do if it were my gate. No pressure.

Questions people ask me
How long should an electric gate motor last?
That depends on quality, use and servicing. A good, well-sized motor that's serviced regularly can last many years.
Is it worth repairing a 15-year-old gate motor?
If parts are available and the rest of the system is sound, it can be. If not, upgrading is often better value.
Do I have to replace both motors?
If the matching model is no longer available, it's normally best to, so they work together properly.
