Overground motors are the most popular way to automate swing gates, and for good reason. They're reliable, cost-effective, quick to fit and easy to service. If you've seen a motor arm on the inside of a pair of gates, that's overground automation.

Overground gate automation is priced after a free site survey. It's normally the most cost-effective way to automate swing gates.

Two main types

  • Linear rams. A straight arm that pushes and pulls the gate. Neat, strong and the most common choice for driveway gates.
  • Articulated arms. A folding arm, a little like your elbow. Useful where the posts are wide or the hinge is set well back from the edge of the post.

Which one suits depends on your posts, your hinges and how far the gates need to open.

Overground Gate Automation for Swing Gates in Carlisle

Overground motors are the most common way to automate swing gates, and for good reason. The motor fits between the gate and the post, it's quick to install, easy to service and works on most types of gate, from timber to steel.

For many homes around Carlisle and Cumbria, overground automation gives the best balance of cost, reliability and ease of maintenance. It's also usually the most cost-effective way to automate gates you already have.

Choosing Overground Motors for Your Electric Gates

There are two main styles: ram-type motors, which push and pull the gate, and articulated arm motors, which suit gates hung on wide pillars. Which one you need depends on the hinge position, the size of the pillars and how far the gate needs to open.

We fit CAME overground motors matched to the weight and width of each leaf, set the forces correctly and force test the gate to BS EN 12453. Motors for existing gates are priced after a free site survey, so you know exactly where you stand.

What I need to check

  • The posts or pillars. The motor mounts on them, so they need to be solid. Brick pillars sometimes need a steel plate or a rebuild.
  • The hinge position. This decides the motor type and how far the gate can open.
  • Room behind the gate. The motor and the opening gate need space.
  • The gate itself. It needs to be strong and swing freely.

Why choose overground?

  • Lower cost than underground
  • Quicker to install, with little or no groundwork at the gate
  • Easy to get at for servicing and repairs
  • Works on most existing swing gates

The downside is that you can see the motors. On most houses that's not a issue – they sit on the inside of the gates. If you want them hidden, see underground gate automation.

The kit I use

I fit CAME overground motors on most domestic and commercial swing gates, including heavy-duty motors for large, heavy or busy gates. See the brands I use.

Fitted safely

Overground motors create pinch points around the hinge and at the edge where the gates meet. I fit the right safety devices for your gates and force test every installation to BS EN 12453.
