Adding or Replacing a Gate Remote

Whether you need a remote for a new driver in the house, or you've lost one down the back of the sofa (or worse, it's been stolen), here's how it works.

Step 1: Get the right remote

Remotes aren't universal. You need one that matches your gate's receiver – normally the same make as the motor or the receiver unit. To find out what you've got:

  • look on the back of an existing remote for a brand and model
  • look for a label on the motor or the control box (from the outside – don't open it)
  • or send me photos and I'll identify it

Getting the Right Remote for Your Electric Gate

Before a new remote can be added, you need one that's compatible with your gate's receiver. The make and model of the motor or receiver usually tells us which remotes will work, and a photo of the control box is often all we need.

Buying a cheap universal remote online can be a false economy if it won't pair with your system or doesn't use rolling code. We'll make sure you get the right one.

Adding or Replacing an Automatic Gate Remote

Once you have the right remote, it has to be coded into the receiver. Some systems let you do this yourself using an existing remote; others need access to the control board, which is a job for us.

If a remote has been lost or stolen, we can remove it from the system so it no longer opens the gate. We programme and replace gate remotes across Carlisle and Cumbria.

Step 2: Code it to the gate

Every new remote has to be "learned" by the receiver before it works. How that's done depends on the system:

  • Some systems let you add a new remote using a remote that already works, standing near the gate. The manual for your system will explain the sequence – it's normally a combination of button presses.
  • Most systems need a button pressed on the receiver or control board itself. The control board runs on mains electricity and is part of the gate's safety system, so that's a job for an engineer.

If you have the manual and your system supports adding remotes from an existing one, give it a go. If not, I can code new remotes on a visit, often while doing a service.

Lost or stolen remotes

A lost remote is a security risk – whoever finds it can open your gate. Get it removed from the system:

  • some receivers can delete one remote individually
  • others need the memory cleared and the remaining remotes re-added

I can do this for you and code in replacements at the same time.

Tips

  • Keep a note of the make and model of your remotes and receiver.
  • Keep a spare remote somewhere safe, away from the car.
  • If you hand remotes to tradespeople or carers, consider a keypad code or app access instead – it's easier to cancel.

Questions people ask me

Can I add a gate remote myself?

On some systems, yes, using a working remote and the manual. On others it needs access to the control board, which is a job for an engineer.

How do I stop a lost remote opening my gate?

Have it deleted from the receiver. Depending on the system, the rest of your remotes may need re-adding.

Do you carry remotes for older systems?

For many of the major brands, yes. Where a remote is no longer made, a new receiver can normally be fitted so modern remotes work.
